A Skeleton in the Family

Shadows of the Mind - Mark Alders I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book but I certainly didn't expect the fantastic B-movie send up that I found. Everything is here, from the tentacled aliens, to blossoming romance and the scrappy ragtag group of unlikely heroes. In less deft hands this story would've turned into a horrible mess but instead Alders gave us a wonderfully campy send up. Not only that the characters were well developed and likable. I couldn't help but root for the underdogs and cheer and wince right along with them. While this isn't the most intellectual of reads, it's great fun and very well done at that. Just because a book is supposed to be light-hearted doesn't mean that it has to be poorly written, and Alders has succeed wonderfully in creating well developed world and characters.
